Founded in 1849 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a secret benevolent society. It was dedicated with a procession through the city of two circus bandwagons and a funeral car with the remains of departed members to be interred in the new cemetery. The Southwestern Lodge No.40 (originally the Teutonia Lodge #10) is the most imposing tomb in the cemetery and also of interest is the Howard Association tomb, founded in 1837 to aid the victims of yellow fever epidemics. Odd Fellows Rest has been hit hard by vandals and (possibly for that reason) the easy access gate has been repaired and the cemetery is rarely open. This is unfortunate as it is one of my favorite cemeteries. It is surrounded by wall vaults and is overgrown with vegetation giving it a secluded, secret aspect. It is well worth a visit if the gate is open.
