As New Orleans grew, a new cemetery was needed further away from the city's living. It was believed at the time that diseases, such as yellow fever, were spread by "miasmas" coming out of the cemetery itself. And so...St. Louis #2 was founded in 1823. This cemetery is much larger than St. Louis #1 and exists in three separate sections. St. Louis #2 has some of the most beautiful iron work in the city and is surrounded by immense wall vaults. Many extremely tall leaning society tombs offer shade as there is not much vegetation. There are many famous New Orleanians buried here. Dominique You, pirate captain under Jean Lafitte. Oscar J. Dunn, an octoroon plasterer, who became lieutenant governor during Reconstruction and many more. This cemetery is located in a very dangerous neighborhood. I highly recommend taking a tour or large group to visit it!

Located on Claiborne avenue, between St. Louis and Iberville
