St. Roch #1 was founded in 1874 and the chapel was finished in 1876. Father Thevis vowed to build this chapel when church members were spared in the yellow fever epidemic of 1868. Within the wall vaults surrounding the cemetery there are fantastic alcoves containing the stations of the cross. The chapel is open and has a wonderful wooden altar and shrine to St. Roch. Under the altar is a glass enclosed statue of Christ and then under that is the final resting place of Father Thevis. The Ex-Voto room to the right of the altar contains objects that depict a prayer answered. Replicas of hands, feet, handicapped childrens braces and a statue of St. Lucy with eyeballs on a plate. It's definitely one of my favorite cemeteries. Take some friends with you for this one and don't leave anything in view inside your car. Located at 1725 St. Roch Avenue Hours:
